Healing and Recovery versus Reconstruction

While the international discourse on Syria’s reconstruction largely revolves around physical rebuilding, with major construction firms anticipating lucrative opportunities, the true foundation of recovery must be healing. Any meaningful intervention must prioritise human conditions, investing in people rather than just infrastructure. Strengthening human capital and nurturing the soft values that sustain communities—social bonds, identity, cultural heritage in all its forms, memory, belonging, and deep-rooted connections—are essential. Without these, reconstruction risks being a hollow endeavor, failing to restore the very essence of what makes a society resilient and whole.
