11 July 2016 – University of Cambridge
Dr. Roudaina Alkhani was honoured and delighted to be invited by Sebastian Macmillan, the Course Leader of the IDBE Masters Programme at the University of Cambridge, to give a lecture and conduct a specialised workshop on waterfront development and planning for his students in July 2016. The workshop included Master’s students from the University of Cambridge as well as guest students and their tutors from the University of Odessa.
The session began with a lecture that Roudaina Delivered followed by a stakeholder workshop in which students discussed two waterfront development areas in Oslo: the Aker Brygge site, which was developed in the late 1980s, and Bjørvika, which has been under development since 2003.
The students examined aspects such as governance, financing, design, and the role of the community. While both developments were designed with a public-oriented function as part of a mixed-use scheme that includes a public realm strategy, they employed different approaches in their development processes. Divided into groups reflecting the diverse stakeholders typically involved in the built environment, the students identified specific priorities and compared and contrasted the two examples based on these priorities. The workshop concluded with a reflection on the development of Odessa Harbour, during which the Odessa students presented their projects.
